‘Party Down South’ Is (Sort Of) The New ‘Buckwild’

‘Jersey Shore’ execs have finally broken out the show to replace the late ‘Buckwild’ in our hearts. The former MTV reality show about youths in the West Virginia “holler” gained so much attention and viewership that it was slated for an eminent return with a second season. Those hopes were cut short, however, when one of its stars, Shain Gandee, died tragically in a car accident. After that, the show was cancelled, never to be heard from again.

Now, less than a year after the accident, CMT has welcomed what can only be considered the updated, trashier, and slightly older version of the former MTV breakout hit. ‘Party Down South’ follows eight 20 and 30-somethings in a South Carolina house for the summer. Naturally, the first episode gave us some insight into how the season might play out. We already got to see the sloppy drunk, tall Amazonian, Mattie. And there was the lovable but also crazy drunk, Murray. Also the tiny crazy drunk, Taylor. The others fit in there somewhere between Jack Daniels in a beer funnel and blacking out so hard they barely remember meeting each other the previous day.

‘Party Down South’ doesn’t share the same charm that the kids brought in ‘Buckwild,’ or the decent amount of history they had, pre-show. But at this point, we’ll take what we can get. And we are definitely willing to give ‘Party Down South’ a good shot. Catch it on CMT Thursdays at 10.
