Here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we’re proud of our all-girl flat track roller derby league, the Brew City Bruisers, which is composed of four home teams: the Crazy 8′s, the Maiden Milwaukee, the Shevil Knevils, and the Rushin’ Rollettes! This league is been kicking butt and taking names since 2005.
But where would a team be without a mascot (or two!)? The role requires energy, enthusiasm, love for the team, and of course, a great costume and character!
I’m privileged to have had the opportunity to interview one of the Crazy 8′s mascots, 13-year-old Anders Johnson, (aka Bruise Lee) during one of the most exciting times — the beginning of the bout season, when, after hard training and team bonding, the girls are refreshed and strong, ready to take on their rivals again, with the help of Anders and Eamon, of course!
Let’s meet one of their ninjas, shall we? (And this is quite privileged information, as ninjas are usually very mysterious…)
Hi Anders! What do you like to do for fun? What are some of your hobbies?
I like to hang out with my friends, drawing and playing video games.
I’d love to see some of your drawings!
So, how long have you been a mascot for the Bruisers?
This is my second season as a mascot for the Crazy 8′s.
And how did you initially get involved? Where did the ninja idea come from?
One of the 8′s Pamela Slamela “Slam” (#227) asked me if I wanted to be a Ninja mascot.
I bet you were very happy. Hey, let’s say our reader has never been to a roller derby bout. How would you convince them to go check it out for the first time?
I would tell them it’s fun to see the derby girls rocking it out! It’s fun for the entire family. They have food and drinks at the arena, too.
Do you have a mascot name? Who came up with it?
My name is Bruise Lee. The 8′s held a contest on their Facebook page to name the ninja. The winner got two tickets to a bout.
Fun! And Anders, do you happen to have a favorite Bruiser? What’s her name? Why is she the coolest?
My favorite Bruiser is Slam. She is a friend of our and she got me involved. My second favorite Bruiser is Milwaukee’s Breast (Emily). She’s on the Shevil Knevils.
I can’t just say which Bruiser is the coolest because they’re all unique in their own way!
I’ll bet you’re psyched about the new season…
We’ve already had our first bout, which was a huge success. The two bouts were both close and my team, the 8′s, won!
Do you have any new plans for anything special to surprise the crowd?
What’s new this season is my friend Eamon. He’s a new ninja mascot. We are still trying to come up with his name Any ideas?
Hmm…How about Luck Norris?
Thanks for speaking with us and sharing a bit about yourself! I’m looking forward to the next bout! See you there, Anders!
